Christmas in Bangkok

Well, kind of. Checked out a few Thai restaurants in my hometown, and a nearby suburb. It is unfortunate that Boulder can't manage to have Thai food this good. At least I have something to look forward to every time I come home!

Boulder has virtually no good Thai food. My friend here is a bona-fide Thai chef (born in Chang Mai, trained in Bangkok) and she told me the dirty secret of American Thai restaurants:

99.5% of the people who run Thai restaurants in the USA are NOT chefs. They are enterprising, unskilled Thai immigrants who have never cooked professionally before opening their restaurant here. ( They couldn't hold a job at a Denny's in Bangkok.)

They make shoddy dishes and then adjust them to the American customer's requests - ("Make it less spicy!")- over time, leading to total suckage.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense. You should check out Thai Avenue sometime. It's by far the most authentic Thai food in Boulder. It's on the hill in that little food court across the street from Cheba Hut. It's cash only, and open wierd hours (usually til about 6-7pm on weeknights). I'm completely addicted to their pad thai. Apparently it's where all the Thai students at CU go to eat, and everytime I go for dinner, the family is always having the most delicious looking Thai family style meal. Ok, now I'm hungry :-)
